established.DUTIES:The Metallurgical and Materials Engineering
Department is committed to student learning and success. Department
standards require faculty to be excellent teachers, engage in
professional development and scholarly activities, and provide
service to the Department, the University, and the Profession. The
Nucor Professor's responsibilities will include focusing on various
aspects of ferrous metallurgy with specific emphasis on current and
emerging industry practices in secondary steelmaking, metal
forming, and shaping. -
The Nucor Professor will teach
courses at the undergraduate and graduate level that may include
assignments to undergraduate laboratories, the
two-course/three-credit senior design sequence, and/or service
courses. The successful candidate will be an outstanding educator
with a strong and demonstrable commitment to teaching.
The Nucor Professor will develop an
internationally recognized program of externally funded research.
The professor will be the thesis advisor and committee chair for
graduate students in the Materials Science and Engineering M.S.
Program and the Materials Science Ph.D. Program. The professor is
expected to establish strong collaborations with colleagues in the
M&ME Department as well as other faculty across the campus,
especially with the Mechanical Engineering Department.
The Nucor Professor will contribute
service to the Department and University in the areas of pedagogy,
assessment, curricular innovation, and/or program accreditation.
The professor will advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate
students and facilitate student engagement with the industry.
Active membership and involvement in the American Iron and Steel
Institute (AISI) are expected.REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
An earned doctorate (Ph.D. or Sc.D.)
in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Materials
Science, or a closely related field before the starting date.
Versatility, interest, and capability
to teach a range of undergraduate and graduate classes, including
laboratories, within the department and service classes external to
the department.
Experience in conducting
metallurgical research with interests that include steelmaking,
metal forming, and shaping. Proficiency must be documented by a
verifiable record of technical publications and presentations that
include book chapters, refereed journal articles, and formal
technical reports on the relevant subject matter.
English language fluency; excellent
verbal and written communication skills. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Three or more years of experience that includes technical
responsibility for metallurgical operations and/or research in iron
and steelmaking; expertise in secondary (electric arc furnace)
steelmaking.
- An undergraduate degree in metallurgical engineering, materials
engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline.
- Passed the Fundamentals of Engineering Examination or,
preferably, have an active Professional Engineering license in one
or more U.S. states.PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The ability to deliver nine 50-minute
lectures per week over the course of each fifteen-week semester;The
ability to continuously instruct laboratories of 1- to 3-hours
duration on a weekly basis throughout each semester;The ability to
use hand tools, operate laboratory equipment and electronic
instrumentation, and perform light to moderate lifting (15 kg). -
