Simplot Company is a true farm-to-table company with operations that touch every aspect of agriculture, including seed production, farming and ranching, plant sciences, fertilizer manufacturing, food processing, commercial product development, and distribution.SummaryOversees the organization's overall commodity risk and defines opportunities to effectively manage/mitigate price volatility while supporting Company financial objectives and ensuring compliance with Company's derivative risk management policies and procedures. Performs risk analysis studies that maximize profits and/or asset growth and minimizes operating losses and other risk exposures, to maintain maximum protection of an organization's assets and provide sustainable earnings. Prepares and coordinates the production of monthly, quarterly, and annual performance reports for senior management. Reviews and analyzes trends in current markets and recommends strategies. Researches competitive positions and recommends strategies. Work includes reviewing, analyzing, and resolving risk issues, predicting potential outcomes, and recommending solutions. Facilitates development of models to extract data and/or use databases to provide statistical and financial modeling. This individual must be able to function independently, think creatively, and will proactively develop business partnerships and interact with internal clients by understanding their goals and deliverables, key processes, technologies, and areas of potential risk. This individual, with support from Treasurer, will also be responsible for establishing, developing, and maintaining positive relationships with key external parties.Key ResponsibilitiesDevelop, own and drive Commodity Risk Management hedging strategies

  • Work with business group leaders, Treasurer and Treasury staff to identify and quantify the commodity price risks the business groups face, and recommend appropriate hedging strategies to mitigate financial risk.
  • Focus on key commodity exposures, including energy (natural gas, crude oil, heating oil, and gasoline), cooking oil, currencies, cattle, grains (corn, wheat, soybeans), and fertilizer.
  • Targeting both intra-group and cross-company opportunities.Execute trading strategies and manage key external relationships
    • Act as primary energy trader and backup trader for other exposures, ensuring ongoing/redundant coverage is in place and working effectively.
    • Manage relationships and negotiate contracts with best-in-class risk management firms (bank/brokers), physical providers, and other subject matter experts.
    • Identify suitable, effective risk management tools/approaches, model their use for key price risks, lead understanding of their accounting and reporting impact, and facilitate company's use where appropriate.Lead engagement and work cross-functionally with business groups
      • Understand the businesses from whom we buy/to whom we sell, to ascertain whether additional risks or opportunities exist.
      • Develop and maintain sound knowledge of relevant commodity markets and trends associated with our key businesses.
      • Identify market best practices and related models for potential consideration by groups/departments.
      • Develop/maintain metrics to determine performance, exposure, risk levels, and positions; provide an additional conduit for information that may improve group decision-making.
      • Provide ad-hoc support to Treasurer, Enterprise F&PA and the business groups team when evaluating and executing strategic transactions, such as acquisitions and greenfield expansions.Ensure compliance and manage reporting
        • Ensure proper controls are developed and used to provide necessary transparency, documentation, and monitoring of all risk management positions and relationships, and to ensure policies, procedures, and accountabilities are defined and followed.
        • Prepare and coordinate the production of monthly, quarterly, and annual performance reports for senior management.
        • Assist Treasurer with presenting to Derivative Risk Committee.--Lead and develop team, and assist with key strategic IT initiatives that impact risk management reporting
          • Train, mentor and develop new and existing analysts.
          • Assist Treasurer and Global Finance Transformation team with key strategic IT initiatives, such as integrating Company's legacy risk management reporting platform into SAP.Typical Education
            • Bachelor's degree (B.A. or B.S.) from 4 year college or university
            • MBA and/or Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) preferred, but not requiredRelevant Experience
              • 10+ years related experience and/or training
              • Extensive energy trading experience required; ag commodity trading experience not required but preferred.
              • Extensive working knowledge of Bloomberg terminal required.
              • Ability to read, analyze, interpret, and negotiate complex documentation.
              • Well-rounded business acumen, with the ability to learn quickly and understand business processes outside of area of expertise
              • Strong time management and customer service skills required with ability to respond effectively to the sensitive inquiries or complaints.
              • Strong communication and interpersonal skills are required, with ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on complex topics to senior management team and external parties.
              • Advanced Excel and financial modelling skills
              • Must be able to influence decision making across business groups and global services
              • Must be able to operate in highly ambiguous situations
              • Excellent critical thinking and presentation skills; proven ability to dissect problems, recommend process/systems solutions, and develop/communicate solutions clearly, concisely, and completely
              • Solid work ethic and team player; ability to work well independently but also collaborate with and influence a cross section of peers and senior management
              • Able to multitask and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
