The City Attorney's Office provides legal services and advice to the Mayor, the City Council and other city departments on a myriad of issues. Our Civil Division provides services that include contract review, real estate transactions, land use planning, civil litigation and risk management. Our Criminal Division prosecutes misdemeanor and infraction offenses that occur within Boise City limits, and also provides prosecution services to the City of Meridian on a contractual basis. Additionally, the Criminal Division provides police training and advice to the Boise and Meridian Police Departments.Our mission is to empower, guide, and protect the City of Boise and our community. Our vision is to provide the highest standard of legal services known for our talent, agility, service, and quality.The City Attorney's Office is currently recruiting for an Attorney III - Criminal. This attorney will --performs all duties of an Attorney I and II --- Criminal, in addition to supervision of the work of lower level attorneys, participation in court process or criminal justice system improvement initiatives. An attorney at this level is able to work independently, with little to no direct supervision. --This position is designated as At-Will.Please submit a resume and cover letter with your application.Handles criminal cases in court. Represents the City of Boise at all levels of the criminal process, including arraignments, pre-trial conferences, motion hearings, bench and jury trials, post-sentencing hearings and appeals. Handles a significant number of misdemeanor criminal and civil infraction cases. May also handle more complex cases and/or conflict juvenile or felony cases.Prepares files for court. Reviews criminal case file. Conducts a criminal background check for each defendant. Reviews defendant---s driver---s license status when necessary. Evaluates strengths and weaknesses of each case. Develops an offer of settlement and negotiates a resolution when possible. Communicates with pro se defendants, defense attorneys, victims, victim witness coordinators, witnesses, police officers, judges, and clerks in a timely manner. Prepares unresolved cases for trial. Uses and updates the office---s internal case management system. Assigns tasks to support staff and successive attorneys as part of case preparation.Researches and writes memoranda and briefs on various criminal issues. Responds to various defense motions, such as motions to suppress or motions to dismiss, and files preemptive motions on behalf of the City. Responds to inquiries from general public or stakeholders in the criminal justice system.Supervises the work of lower level attorneys or limited license interns. Leads other attorneys in special projects or assignments, such as attorney training. Participates in improvement initiatives as assigned.(100%)Performs other duties as assigned.   • Must have a Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school--
  • Five years of experience in civil or criminal litigation, or municipal governanceLevel of Knowledge
    • Intermediate Level of Knowledge of the principles of civil and criminal law, court rules and trial procedure, rules of evidence, rules of professional conduct, and legal ethicsAbilities
      • Ability to perform the duties of an Attorney I & II --- Criminal and work independently with little to no supervision
      • Operate a computer with demonstrated proficiency using contemporary databases, word processing and spreadsheets software applications
      • Communicate proficiently verbally and in writing to respond to complex cases in state court, and to write briefs and other complex legal documents; review, proof, and critique the legal research and opinions of others
      • Represent the City before outside agencies, communities and elected and/or appointed officials; display an attitude of cooperation, and work harmoniously with all levels of City employees and the public
      • Communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance; complete assignments in a timely fashion; understand and comply with all rules, policies, and regulations; maintain prompt and regular attendance; perform all essential and marginal functions as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor and/or manager with or without a reasonable accommodation
      • Capable of operating vehicles safely and have an acceptable driving record.Position requires work that may be outside of, or extends beyond, a typical 8am to 5pm M-F workweekPreferred Knowledge, Experience, And Training
        • Seven or more years of specialized knowledge and experience in criminal law
        • Experience leading or supervising lower level employees
        • Experience working with and advising interdisciplinary work groups and/or participation on a project management or implementation teamLicensing And Other Requirements
          • Must be a licensed and active member in good standing with the Idaho State Bar
