Responsible for the design, development, testing, and implementation of mechanical engineering projects. Evaluates customer specifications for mechanical design requirements, designs locomotive mechanical systems including underframes, trucks, equipment arrangement, cooling and lube oil systems, carbodies and fuel tanks. Prepares Mechanical Parts Lists and Bills of Material. Makes work assignments to mechanical designers. Directs teams in design of plans and schematics. Maintains good working relationships with clients, staff, and outside contractors. Supervises and supports team members and ensures that established goals and deadlines are met. Ensures compliance with safety regulations and requirements. Keeps superiors informed of status and significant problems.

Manages projects and leads teams in designing, developing, and assembling projects from concept to final manufacture.
  • Manages individual design and assembly projects.
  • Stays informed of new technologies, trends, and regulations in mechanical engineering. Applies innovative technologies to designs.
  • Researches design proposals, specifications, and requirements. Analyzes data and applies to product designs.
  • Troubleshoots machines and systems as required.
  • Prepares and coordinates reports including proposals, budgets, and construction cost analyses.
  • Evaluates price proposals and related documentation.
  • Prepares engineering, design, and assembly documents.
  • Ensures that safety regulations and requirements are met.
  • Schedule, plans, conducts and may supervise project work. Reviews progress and evaluates results. Recommends changes in procedures. Train junior level employees in technical complexities of assigned work. Reviews progress with management. Assist with the hiring, review, and evaluation of personnel performance. Operates with considerable latitude for unreviewed action or decisions.
QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Certification:

College degree in mechanical engineering or related field.

Required Knowledge:

Thorough understanding of mechanical engineering and assembly principles.

Knowledge of code requirements.

Experience Required:

5+ years Engineering experience. Previous project management experience a plus. Previous supervisory experience a plus.

Skills/Abilities:

Able to prioritize projects.

Well organized.

Able to operate computer applications (Microsoft Office and engineering software).

Good communications skills.

Solid leadership abilities.
