Position Description

Correctional Nurses provide professional nursing care to patients in a correctional setting. Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.

The Division of Child & Family Services (DCFS) is recruiting for a Correctional Nurse 2. This position will be located at the Nevada Youth Training Center (NYTC) a 60-bed staff secure facility for male youth ages 14 to 18. NYTC's goal is to promote positive self-growth, create change in behavior, attitudes, values, and ways of thinking.

Incumbent is responsible for providing professional nursing care in the facility by coordinating and evaluating health care services and treatment for the juveniles of the facility; maintaining pharmaceutical, laboratory, and basic nursing supplies in an organized and efficient manner; conducting weekly doctor clinics promoting workplace safety; medication administration; responding to medical and psychiatric emergencies; completing documentation; and provide professional resources for the facility staff regarding health and safety issues. This full-time position will be from the hours of 2pm - 10pm and will include weekends and holidays with overtime after 40 hours in a week. DCFS encourages education by providing on-going trainings and paid release time for staff to obtain CEU's.

Please note: Out-of-state applicants must have a temporary license as a Registered Nurse issued by the Nevada State Board of Nursing at the time of appointment and must obtain permanent licensure as a Registered Nurse issued by the Nevada State Board of Nursing as a condition of continuing employment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • License as a Registered Nurse and two years of professional nursing experience, one of which was in a correctional or institutional setting; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.

  • The exam will consist of an application evaluation. It is essential that applications include detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. The most qualified applicants will be contacted by the hiring agency for interview. The hiring agency may require specific skills related testing as part of the interviewing process.

Special Requirements

  • CPR certification is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
  • A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant.
  • A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to pay for these items.
  • Some positions require a valid driver's license at time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
  • Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.
  • A Bachelor's degree from an approved school of professional nursing, pursuant to NRS 632, is equivalent to a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • As a condition of appointment and continuing employment, positions are subject to call-back, overtime on short notice, stand-by status, and may require work on evenings, weekends, or holidays.
