The incumbent is responsible for performing a variety of complex and recurring duties supporting Forest Health Protection/Pest Management Program implementation. Learn more about this agency Responsibilities Schedules, organizes, and executes field and laboratory projects for detecting, identifying and evaluating forest pest/forest health protection problems. Resolves common administrative and safety concerns related to the project; trains and supervises lower grade employees, collects insect and disease samples, establishes test and control plots, as necessary. Compiles and summarizes the data that he/she obtains from aerial and ground surveys including forest health monitoring, biological evaluations, and pilot tests conducted as part of the project. Takes photographs to record forest damage and insects and pathogens; runs computer programs to organize the data for analysis; conducts routine analyses; and provides the data to professional personnel after checking it and developing explanations for unusually high or low figures or figures that seem inconsistent. Assists with development of reports after higher graded employees have refined and verified the data and analyzed the results. GS 07: (1) One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-06 grade level. Specialized experience is defined as: Using tools such as a map, compass, or GPS navigation, collecting biological data, inspecting multiple sites, and modifying procedures in performing insect-related biology assignments and project activities. Assisting in scheduling, organizing, and conducting field and laboratory projects for the detection, identification, and evaluation of insect pests. Assessing technical support studies of field data in order to prepare drafts and reports of insect and plant disease-related biological data and findings. Collecting biological data, inspecting multiple sites, and modifying procedures in performing work in support of natural resource management projects and programs. -OR Successful completion of 1 year of graduate level education (18 semester/27 quarter hours), courses are any combination of scientific or technical courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics. -OR A combination of education and experience listed above. Additional information PLEASE NOTE: This vacancy is being used to fill positions for FY2020 Temporary Employment Hiring season. This position is temporary, has a Not-to-Exceed date and will be filled for up to 6 months or as a not to exceed (NTE) 1 year, however an extension of the appointment may be possible without further competition. The appointment may also end early due to lack of work or lack of funds. The number and location of positions to be filled will be dependent upon individual unit needs. You will be evaluated in accordance with the category rating procedure as defined in the USDA Demonstration Project Plan. Eligible applicants will be further evaluated against criteria for placement in the Quality category. This evaluation is based on the level of your experience, education, and/or training as determined by your responses to the Assessment Questionnaire.
