We have an exciting opportunity here at Albertsons within our Strategic Sourcing Team as a Distributed Energy Resource Analyst that is based out of our Boise, ID, Pleasanton, CA or Dallas, TX offices.

Position Purpose
This position reports directly to the Vice President of Energy Procurement and indirectly to the Senior Sourcing Managers - Energy Procurement. Responsibilities include monitoring, analyzing and evaluating distributed energy resources (DER) and new energy technologies and the corresponding electric supply structures including solar, wind, fuel cells, storage, cogeneration and microgrids. Also included are evaluating proposed deal structures such as power purchase agreements and virtual power purchase agreements, capital and operating leases and Albertsons Companies, Inc. (ACI) direct ownership. The position will vet DER financial proformas and models to validate all assumptions, including utility rate schedule components, forward energy market price curves, federal and state incentive streams as well as proforma/model accuracy. Duties also encompass project management lead on approved DER opportunities of high-performing projects which will mitigate electricity price risk and/or meet corporate sustainability objectives.
In addition to DG technology analysis and opportunity vetting activities, the position will assist the Energy Procurement team in the daily operations of 3rd party competitive electric and natural gas supply, including telecom, metering, account "add-drop", and analysis of billing and utility energy data under the supervision of designated personnel. Additionally, the position will provide support to the Energy Procurement team to implement the approved risk management, procurement, and sustainability strategies. The DER Analyst will work with utilities to understand electric and natural gas rate schedules and rules and the associated impacts on project proformas and models.
This position will collaborate and partner with other internal stakeholders such as Corporate FP&A, the National Accounting Service Center (NASC), Accounting, Maintenance, Supply Operations, Energy Operations, Manufacturing, Division Operations; and others. This position will also interact under supervision with serving electricity and natural gas utilities, metering and telecom companies, and 3rd party electric and natural gas suppliers.

Key Accountabilities Include
Review, analyze, create (where appropriate) and run sophisticated pricing and economic models (Excel/Access/Python/R/SQL/Power BI) for distributed energy resources (DER) and energy storage opportunities to assess project viability under a variety of use cases.
Evaluate project economics based on utility savings, grid-services revenue, financing costs, price to beat, etc.
Validate DER and energy storage requirements for Regional Transmission Organization (RTO), Independent System Operator (ISO), and utility market participation for ancillary services, capacity, demand response, energy arbitrage and critical peak period management, etc.
Build relationships with utility service providers to understand rates and rules that apply to distributed generation and energy storage.
Track electric and natural gas rate changes for impact on DG project opportunities and proformas.
Support Energy Procurement in drafting and reviewing contract language related to distributed generation and storage offerings.
Maintain, monitor, and track designated tasks, milestones, and deliverables.

Education Level
4-year college degree. B.S. preferred (or equivalent practical experience).
Engineering and/or Financial discipline preferred.
2+ years of hands-on experience with DER project proforma/modeling development and/or analysis in a technical or quantitative role (finance, sales engineering, consulting, etc.).
Experience modeling contracted and merchant asset cash flows in competitive and non-competitive energy markets.
Understanding of industry standard techniques for modeling DER and/or storage economics
Energy market knowledge to include derivatives and risk management principles preferred.
Basic understanding of electric and natural gas utility rate structures.
CEM a plus.

Skills And Experiences
Advanced Microsoft Excel (High Proficiency), Word and PowerPoint proficiency a must.
Experience with building financial models, preferably in the renewable and/or energy storage industry.
Understanding of general accounting and finance principles preferred.
Knowledge of utility billing determinants and tariff design preferred.
Ability to work autonomously with excellent time management skills, focusing on key outcomes amidst competing priorities and tight deadlines.
Comfortable embracing ambiguity in a fast paced, collaborative environment.
Excellent problem solving, analytical and organizational skills
Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
Grocery Retail experience a plus.
Experience with ESG and carbon reporting a plus.

Preferred Skills And Experience
Direct experience in energy industry, preferably with DER or Energy Storage developer, retail energy services provider, energy marketer or consultant level experience or other related services focusing on energy market analytics and project proforma evaluation.
Knowledge of competitive RTO/ISO market fundamentals.
Experience in large-scale energy project development or project finance; renewable energy focus a plus.
Experience and familiarity with industry standard techniques and modeling tools for Solar + Storage (for example, Energy Toolbase, Helioscope, PVWatts).
Familiarity with common data science languages (Python/R) to leverage existing tools and run ad-hoc analyses.
Familiarity with 3rd party industry tools such as Xendee, Helioscope, ReOpt, etc.
Experience evaluating pros and cons of distributed generation and storage sizing and use cases.
MBA or Masters Degree in a related field a plus.

Travel Requirements

Physical Environment
Most work is performed in a temperature-controlled office environment.
Incumbent may sit for long periods of time at desk or computer terminal.
Incumbent will visit and spend some time at Retail, Manufacturing and Distribution facilities.
Incumbent may use calculators, keyboards, telephone, and other office equipment in the course of normal workday.
Stooping, bending, twisting, and reaching may be required in completion of job duties.
